After a Break-In or a Rock
Most side windows and many back windows are made of tempered glass. Unlike a windshield, which is laminated with a plastic layer that holds it together, tempered glass is designed to break into lots of small, blunt pieces. That's a safety feature, but it makes a mess. Pieces end up in the seats, the carpet, the door panel and the window channel.
That's why cleanup is part of the job, not an afterthought. Leftover fragments inside the door can scratch new glass or jam the window regulator. Loose bits in the seat tracks can turn up for months.
Rear windows bring one more wrinkle. Many have defroster lines, the thin heating grid printed on the glass. Some also carry antenna lines. The replacement glass needs to match your vehicle so those features work again once it's installed.

Can a side window be repaired like a windshield chip?
Usually not. Tempered glass doesn't hold a chip; once it's damaged it tends to break entirely. Rock chip repair is for laminated windshields.
