Why Headlights Fog and Yellow
Almost every modern car uses plastic headlight lenses instead of glass. The plastic is light, tough and hard to shatter, which is why automakers use it. The downside is that raw plastic doesn't hold up well in sunlight, so it leaves the factory with a thin clear coat on top.
Over time, UV light breaks that coating down. Once it starts to fail, the plastic underneath oxidizes. That's the yellow tint and the chalky surface you see. Road grit, gravel, harsh washes and winter road treatments speed things along by pitting the surface. Montana's high, bright summers don't help either.
For most cars, restoration beats replacement. The damage is usually only on the outer surface, so taking that layer off and resealing it brings back clarity without buying new assemblies. A full headlight assembly on many newer vehicles is an expensive part. Restoration keeps the housing, wiring and seals you already have.
There are limits, and we'll be upfront about them. If there's moisture or fog inside the headlight, a cracked housing, or a broken mount, polishing the outside won't fix it. In those cases replacement is the honest answer.
While we're there, it's a good time to look at the windshield too. A small rock chip is easy to deal with on the same visit.
