Fix It Before It Spreads
The rule of thumb in the auto glass trade is simple. If the damage is smaller than a quarter, it can usually be repaired. Once a crack runs past about 2½ to 3 inches, you're most likely looking at a new windshield instead.
Why do chips grow? A chip is a weak point with tiny fractures branching off it. Every bump, door slam and temperature swing puts stress on those fractures. Montana winters make it worse. On a cold morning, blasting the defroster warms the inside of the glass while the outside stays frozen. That difference pulls on the chip, and a small break can run into a long crack before you're out of the driveway. Water getting into the chip and freezing does the same thing.
Here's what the repair actually does. The resin fills the air pockets in the break and bonds the glass back together. That stops the spreading and restores strength to the spot.
What will it look like afterward? Most repairs leave a faint mark where the impact point was, much less noticeable than before. It won't vanish entirely, but it will be clearer, stronger and far less likely to grow. Until we get there, keep tape or a clean sticker over the chip to keep dirt and moisture out.
