Repair or Replace
Can my chip be repaired, or do I need a new windshield?
The rule of thumb: if the chip or crack is smaller than a quarter, it can usually be repaired. If the damage is bigger than about 2½ to 3 inches, it usually needs a new windshield. Damage right in the driver's line of sight or at the edge of the glass can also tip it toward replacement. Call and we'll tell you honestly. See rock chip repair.
Will a small chip really spread?
It can, and often at the worst time. Glass expands and contracts with temperature, so a cold morning, a hot defroster or a pothole can turn a chip into a crack that runs across the windshield. In Montana winters, damage can spread quickly. Repairing it early is cheaper and faster than replacing the glass later.
Will I still see the chip after it's repaired?
Usually a faint mark remains, but the repair fills the damage so it's much less noticeable, and more importantly it stops the chip from spreading.
Can I get a ticket for a cracked windshield?
If the damage is significant, it's possible to be ticketed for driving an unsafe vehicle if you're pulled over. Beyond that, a damaged windshield is a safety problem. It supports the roof and helps protect you in an accident.
Insurance and Cost
Does insurance cover windshield repair or replacement?
Glass damage usually falls under comprehensive coverage. Many insurers cover chip repairs with little or nothing out of pocket, and for a replacement you may pay only your deductible. Every policy is different, so check yours. Read how insurance claims usually work.
Can I choose who fixes my glass if I use insurance?
In general, yes. You can tell your insurer which glass company you want to use. We'll help you with what your insurer needs.
How much does a new windshield cost?
It depends on the year, make and model, the type of glass, whether it has features like sensors or a heated area, and the moldings and parts the job needs. Estimates are always free, so call (406) 531-7790 for a real number.

How long does it take?
A rock chip repair takes about 25 minutes. A windshield replacement is often done in around an hour.
When can I drive after a windshield replacement?
Not right away. The adhesive that holds the windshield needs time to set before the car is safe to drive, and it varies with the product and the weather. We'll tell you exactly when it's safe before we leave.
Can you work in cold or bad weather?
Often, yes, but glass work depends on conditions. If the weather means the job wouldn't be done right, we'll tell you and set a better time. A rushed install in the wrong conditions is how good glass fails early.
My car has lane-keeping or automatic braking. Does that matter?
It can. Many newer vehicles have a camera mounted behind the windshield, and automakers often call for it to be recalibrated after a replacement. Epic Auto Glass doesn't do calibration, so that's a separate visit to a dealer or calibration shop. Tell us your vehicle when you call.
