Windshield Insurance Claims in Montana
Paying for a new windshield through insurance is usually simpler than people expect. Here's how it tends to work, and how we help you get it sorted.
Windshield Insurance Claims in Missoula and Western Montana
A windshield insurance claim sounds like paperwork and phone calls. Most of the time it's neither. Glass damage is usually handled under the comprehensive part of your auto policy, and a lot of drivers find their share of the bill is small or nothing at all.
If you're going through insurance, Epic Auto Glass doesn't file the claim for you, but we'll help you with what your insurer needs: vehicle details, a description of the damage and the work we're doing. Joe will walk you through it if you've never done one before.
One thing worth knowing up front: you choose who repairs your car. An insurer may suggest a shop, but the decision is yours. If you want a local, mobile installer with a lifetime guarantee, you can ask for us by name.
Signs It's Worth Calling Your Insurer
- You carry comprehensive coverage on the vehicle
- The windshield needs replacing, not just a chip filled
- Your deductible is lower than what the job is likely to run
- Your policy mentions glass or chip repair coverage
- The damage came from a rock, hail, a falling branch or vandalism
- You're not sure what's covered and want a straight answer

How a Glass Claim Usually Works
Every policy is different, so treat this as the general picture, not a promise about yours.
Comprehensive coverage usually covers glass. Comprehensive is the part of a policy that handles damage that isn't from a collision: rocks, hail, falling objects, theft and vandalism. Most windshield damage lands here. If you only carry liability, glass generally isn't covered.
The deductible decides whether a claim makes sense. If your deductible is higher than the cost of the work, paying yourself is often simpler. If it's lower, insurance picks up the difference. Put a new windshield through insurance and you'll often pay only the deductible.
Chip repairs are often treated differently. Plenty of insurers skip the deductible when it's just a chip, since a small fix now costs less than a whole windshield later. Check your policy. That's a big reason to get a rock chip handled quickly.
What to have ready when you call:
- Your policy number and the name on the policy
- Year, make and model of the vehicle, plus the VIN if you have it
- The date the damage happened and how it happened
- Where the damage is on the glass and roughly how big it is
What Affects the Price
Your deductible
This is usually the biggest factor in what you personally pay.
Repair versus replacement
A chip fill costs far less than new glass.
The glass your vehicle takes
Sensors, heating and special tints change the part.
Camera recalibration
Some vehicles need their windshield camera recalibrated after a new windshield. That's done separately by a dealer or calibration shop, and your insurer may treat it as part of the claim.
