There's a simple rule of thumb in the industry: if the chip or crack is smaller than a quarter, it can usually be repaired. Repair is faster and less costly than a new windshield, it's often covered by insurance, and a good repair still meets safety requirements.
If the damage is bigger than about 2½ to 3 inches, it's usually too large to repair, and the windshield needs to be replaced. Cracks in the driver's line of sight or running to the edge of the glass often mean replacement too.
The catch is time. A chip that could be filled today can run into a long crack after one cold Montana morning with the defroster on high. If you're not sure which side of the line you're on, call.
